Photos for OS X wasn't ready in time for the Yosemite launch, but today Apple released the app to developers and some members of the press as part of the first preview build of OS X 10.10.3. The app is an offshoot of the Photos app for iOS, and early demos of the app showed that it used the same icon and a similar interface. Apple announced back in June of 2014 that both the consumer-level iPhoto app and the pro-level Aperture app would be replaced by a new app called Photos for OS X (which may have begun life as iPhoto X). The writing has been on the wall for Apple's older photo editing apps for some time now.
